Speckle Filtering of SAR Images - A Comparative Study Between Complex-Wavelet-Based and Standard Filters
نویسنده
چکیده
We present a comparative study between a complex Wavelet Coeecient Shrinkage (WCS) lter and several standard speckle lters that are widely used in the radar imaging community (Lee, Kuan, Frost, Geometric, Kalman, Gamma, etc.). The WCS lter is based on the use of Symmetric Daubechies (SD) wavelets which share the same properties as the real Daubechies wavelets but with an additional symmetry property. The ltering operation is an elliptical soft-thresholding procedure with respect to the principal axes of the 2-D complex wavelet coeecient distributions. Both qualitative and quantitative results (signal to mean square error ratio, equivalent number of looks, edgemap gure of merit) are reported. Tests have been performed using simulated speckle noise as well as real radar images. It is found that the WCS lter performs equally well as the standard lters for low-level noise and slightly outperforms them for higher-level noise.

Speckle Reduction in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images in Wavelet Domain Exploiting Intra-scale and Inter-scale Dependencies
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are inherently affected by a multiplicative noise-like phenomenon called speckle, which is indeed the nature of all coherent systems. Speckle decreases the performance of almost all the information extraction methods such as classification, segmentation, and change detection, therefore speckle must be suppressed. Despeckling can be applied by the multilooki...
متن کاملSpeckle Reduction in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images in Wavelet Domain Using Laplace Distribution
Speckle is a granular noise-like phenomenon which appears in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images due to coherent properties of SAR systems. The presence of speckle complicates both human and automatic analysis of SAR images. As a result, speckle reduction is an important preprocessing step for many SAR remote sensing applications. Speckle reduction can be made through multi-looking during the...
متن کاملA comparative study on SAR images speckle reduction in a wavelet transform framework
Speckle is a troublesome noise, disturbing radar SAR image interpretation and target classification. For reduction of speckle, numerous speckle filters have been proposed. Both suppression of speckle in a uniform area and preservation of edges have been pursued in these filters. In these years, the wavelet transformation is widely applied to images analysis, where the multi-resolution analysis ...
متن کاملSpeckle Reduction of SAR Images using Adaptive Sigmoid Thresholding and Analysis of various Filtering Techniques
In this paper, an effective method for speckle reduction and image enhancement for SAR images is proposed. The novelty of the proposed method is the adaptive calculation of parameters with ease in adaptive sigmoid thresholding approach for removing the speckle noise from the SAR images followed by post-processing operation. The noise removal operation is carried out in wavelet domain using db4 ...
متن کاملA Sar Speckle Filtering Algorithm towards Edge Sharpening
One of the major difficulties when classifying synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is the existence of speckle due to coherent processing. Existing speckle filtering algorithms can effectively reduce the speckle effect but unfortunately also smear edges and blur images. It is realized that fluctuations in an image can be due to either local oscillations or edge crossings. An appropriate filte...
